Amylase
Amylase is a digestive enzyme (especially from the pancreas and salivary glands) that breaks down starch. With irritation or inflammation of the pancreas it leaks into the blood in larger amounts.
| Rating | Range | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Good | below 100 U/L | Within range. |
| Worth improving | 100 – 200 U/L | Slightly elevated. |
| Talk to a doctor | 200 U/L and above | Elevated — pancreas; seek advice. |
Why it matters
UEG/IAP: a markedly elevated level with pain indicates pancreatitis.
If it’s low
Low amylase is mostly insignificant (severe pancreatic damage more rarely).
If it’s high
Elevated amylase often indicates inflammation of the pancreas (severe upper abdominal pain), but can also be diseases of the salivary glands or intestine.
What to do
Amylase is not a lifestyle marker. A rise with severe abdominal pain (often radiating to the back, after alcohol/fatty food) is an EMERGENCY — see a doctor immediately.
