ECP (eosinophil cationic protein)

ECP is a protein released by activated eosinophils — white blood cells active in allergic and parasitic responses. Elevated ECP indicates that eosinophils are active.

Worth improving13.3 – 24 µg/LMildly elevated — possible eosinophilic (allergic) activity; interpret in context.

Range: reference interval set by the laboratory (method-dependent) — the app uses the range printed on your report.

Why it matters

It reflects the intensity of eosinophilic (often allergic) inflammation.

If it’s low

Low ECP is of no clinical significance.

If it’s high

Elevated ECP accompanies active allergic/eosinophilic inflammation (asthma, atopic dermatitis, allergic rhinitis), and can also occur in parasitic infections. On its own it is not a diagnosis.

What to do

Elevated ECP alone does not require action — context matters (symptoms, eosinophils, IgE). If you have allergic problems, discuss its significance with a physician/allergist. The sample must be handled correctly, otherwise the value may be falsely high.
