Chloride is an electrolyte that, together with sodium, maintains fluid balance and the acid-base balance of the blood. It mostly changes in parallel with sodium.

Why it matters

Interpret with sodium and bicarbonate.

If it’s low

Low chloride often accompanies vomiting or certain metabolic (alkalotic) disorders.

If it’s high

High chloride often accompanies dehydration or certain metabolic (acidotic) disorders; it is rarely an isolated problem.

What to do

Interpret chloride with sodium and the acid-base status — on its own it rarely guides action. A doctor addresses abnormalities in context.
