Why it matters
Low rules out chronic heart failure; elevated requires cardiac evaluation (ESC HF).
If it’s low
Low NT-proBNP is reassuring — heart failure is unlikely.
If it’s high
Elevated NT-proBNP shows the heart is strained — often with heart failure, but also with too high blood pressure, arrhythmias, kidney disease or age.
What to do
NT-proBNP is not a lifestyle marker. A rise with shortness of breath, leg swelling or fatigue belongs to a doctor (cardiac assessment).
