Testosterone

Testosterone is the main male sex hormone (women also have some). It regulates libido, muscle mass, bones, energy and sperm production. It has a daily rhythm — highest in the morning.

Why it matters

Low (M) affects energy/libido; high (F) may suggest PCOS.

If it’s low

Low testosterone (men) presents as fatigue, low libido, poorer erection, loss of muscle and mood. It is often accompanied by obesity and insulin resistance.

If it’s high

High testosterone in men is rare (often external sources/steroids); in women it can accompany PCOS (acne, excess hair growth, irregular cycles).

What to do

Measure in the morning (rhythm). Mildly low in a man often improves with weight loss, sleep, exercise and good metabolic control. Persistently low with symptoms → endocrinologist.
