Tryptase (baseline)
Tryptase is an enzyme stored by mast cells (cells central to allergic reactions). Baseline (resting) serum tryptase reflects the total mast cell load in your body.

Why it matters
An elevated baseline value points toward mastocytosis or hereditary alpha-tryptasemia.
If it’s low
Low tryptase is of no clinical significance.
If it’s high
A persistently elevated baseline tryptase can be hereditary (common hereditary alpha-tryptasemia — harmless) or a sign of mastocytosis; kidney damage and some blood disorders also raise it. A consultation is needed to clarify.
What to do
A basally elevated value should be evaluated by a physician (allergist/hematologist) — it is often a harmless hereditary variant, but sometimes further work-up is needed. If you have had a severe allergic reaction, it is useful to measure tryptase both in the hours after the event and then at baseline.
