Ferritin and iron: what the values mean and how to improve them

Part of the guide: Iron & ferritin →

In short

  • Ferritin is the body's iron “store” — it tells you how much you have in reserve.
  • It is often low even when haemoglobin is still normal. This shows up as tiredness.
  • A sensible target is above 50 µg/L. Below 30 means empty stores.
  • You raise it with iron from food + vitamin C, and a supplement if needed.
  • Very low ferritin or signs of anaemia belong with a doctor.

Ferritin is one of the most useful blood markers, and one of the most overlooked. It shows how full your iron stores are. Iron is the fuel your body needs to carry oxygen, make energy and stay focused.

What ferritin is and why it matters

Not all the iron in your body is in red blood cells. Part of it is kept as a reserve. Ferritin is the protein that holds this reserve. Its level in the blood is a good mirror of your iron stores. When the stores fall, the body keeps haemoglobin normal at first, but it is running “on reserve”. So you can feel tired even though the basic blood count looks fine. This is a common reason for unexplained tiredness, poorer fitness and hair loss.

What your values mean

Ferritin (µg/L)Meaning
below 15empty stores (deficiency)
15–30low stores — a common cause of tiredness
30–50suboptimal; the target is above 50
50–200stores on target
above 200raised — often a sign of inflammation (more rarely overload)

How to raise iron and ferritin naturally

1) Iron from food, twice a day

The best sources are beef and other red meats. They contain haem iron, which is absorbed well. Legumes (lentils, chickpeas, beans) and dark leafy greens (spinach, chard) are good sources too.

2) Add vitamin C to the same meal

Vitamin C markedly increases how much iron you absorb from plant foods. In practice: add peppers, citrus fruit, kiwi or a little lemon juice to a meal of legumes or vegetables.

3) Keep tea and coffee away from meals

Tannins in tea and coffee block iron absorption. Drink them at least an hour before or after a meal containing iron.

4) A supplement only after talking to a doctor

If your stores stay low, an iron supplement makes sense. Agree the dose and how long to take it with your doctor. Too much iron is not harmless.

A realistic target: ferritin above 50 µg/L. A change usually shows within 8–12 weeks. A follow-up report is the best way to see your progress.

When to see a doctor. Very low ferritin (below 15), signs of anaemia (marked tiredness, breathlessness, dizziness) or raised ferritin belong with a doctor. Finding the cause matters (e.g. blood loss or inflammation), not just topping up the value.

How Blood Lab 360 helps with this

Upload your report and ferritin is no longer just a number. We explain the result in plain language and show whether it is on target. We also prepare concrete steps to improve it. Over time we track your progress, so you can see that your effort is working.

Frequently asked questions

What is a normal ferritin value?

The reference range is wide. For feeling well, a sensible target is above 50 µg/L. Values below 30 µg/L often mean empty stores.

Why am I tired even though my blood is normal?

Even with normal haemoglobin, your iron stores (ferritin) can be low. This is a common and often overlooked cause of tiredness.

How fast can I raise ferritin?

With diet and, if needed, a supplement, stores usually improve noticeably within 8–12 weeks. A follow-up report shows the progress.
