Blood sugar and HbA1c: what they mean and how to calm them

Part of the guide: Blood sugar & insulin →

In short

  • Glucose shows your sugar right now, HbA1c the average of the last ~3 months.
  • The “prediabetes” range is a warning — it can often be reversed.
  • Target: fasting glucose below 5.6 mmol/L, HbA1c below 5.7%.
  • You calm it with less sugar, more fibre, a walk after meals and exercise.
  • Glucose of 7.0 or more, or HbA1c of 6.5% or more, belongs with a doctor.

Blood sugar is one of the most important markers of metabolic health. The good news: this is where lifestyle has enormous power. Values can often be calmed before they become a problem.

Glucose and HbA1c — what is the difference

Fasting glucose shows what your sugar is at a given moment. HbA1c (glycated haemoglobin) tells you the average of roughly the last three months. That makes it excellent for following a trend. Together they give a reliable picture.

Prediabetes5.6–6.9 mmol/L5.7–6.4%
Diabetes (likely)7.0 or more6.5% or more

How to calm blood sugar naturally

1) Fewer refined carbohydrates and sugary drinks

Sugary drinks and white-flour products raise sugar the fastest. Swap them for water and whole-grain sources.

2) Fibre every day (≥30 g)

Vegetables, legumes and whole grains slow the rise in sugar and improve insulin sensitivity.

3) The order of your meal

Eat fibre and protein first, and starch only afterwards. This flattens the sugar spike after the meal — a simple but effective trick.

4) A walk after meals

Even 10–15 minutes of walking after eating noticeably lowers post-meal sugar. Muscles “use up” glucose.

5) Exercise and sleep

A combination of endurance exercise and strength training improves glucose control. Poor sleep makes it worse.

A realistic goal: because HbA1c reflects three months, a change shows up after about 12 weeks of consistent habits. A follow-up report confirms your progress.

When to see a doctor. Fasting glucose of 7.0 mmol/L or more, or HbA1c of 6.5% or more, belongs with a doctor for confirmation and treatment. The same goes for symptoms: thirst, frequent urination, unexplained weight loss.
