eGFR

eGFR is an estimate of how many milliliters of blood your kidneys clear per minute — calculated from creatinine, age and sex. It is the most practical measure of kidney function.

Why it matters

Per KDIGO, the foundation of kidney assessment; eGFR <60 (for ≥3 months) or albuminuria means chronic kidney disease.

If it’s low

Low eGFR means less filtration reserve in the kidneys. A mild reduction is common (age) and we monitor it; persistently below 60 (3 months) defines chronic kidney disease.

If it’s high

A high/normal eGFR is favorable. A very high value may just be an artifact of low muscle mass.

What to do

Mild reduction: enough fluids, control of blood pressure and blood sugar, caution with NSAIDs. Persistently low (below 60, 3 months) → seek advice and regular monitoring.
